IQVIA, a health information technology and clinical research solution provider, is currently running its COVID-19 Healthcare App Challenge, a hackathon-style competition for developers that wish to leverage the recently released IQVIA HealthCare Locator SDK. Developers can sign up for the event here and have until June 28th to submit an app that helps consumers locate and engage healthcare providers in their area.

The COVID-19 Healthcare App Challenge is open to all mobile and web developers that are interested in using the IQVIA SDK to create an app that helps underserved communities that have been impacted by COVID-19. On July 19th, a panel of judges consisting of DevOps and life sciences experts will announce the winner of the competition.

We spoke to IQVIA CTO  David Clarke who explained that one of the major goals of the hackathon is to “facilitate impactful donations to charities that...are helping to serve underserved communities and helping them cope with the impacts of COVID-19.” To that end, all monetary prizes will be donated to a participating charity of the winner's choice including Good360, GlobalGiving, Asian Pacific Fund, and more. The prizes are as follows:

  • 1st Place: $30,000 USD donation. Exclusive networking sessions with an IQVIA Chief Data Scientist and a Microsoft executive IT leader.
  • 2nd Place: $15,000 USD donation.
  • 3rd Place: $6,500 USD donation.
  • Best Integration: $4,500 USD donation.
  • 4 Honorable Mention Winners: $1,000 USD donations.

When asked about IQVIA’s history with hackathons Clarke explained that this is the first public hackathon run at this scale for the company. Currently, there are more than 500 participants and the hackathon is a completely virtual event being hosted on the Devpost platform. Per Clarke, IQVIA views the platform as one that has a wide audience and is well suited to holding events of this kind.

The IQVIA HealthCare Locator SDK provides app developers with access to a database that includes records for 21.5 million healthcare providers and 2.5 million healthcare organizations globally.
